Speed pedelec vs e-bike. What is the difference?

Think of pedelecs and speed pedelecs as two types of electric bikes with different levels of power and speed. A pedelec gives you a little boost while you pedal, helping you reach speeds of up to 25 km/h—perfect for cruising around without breaking a sweat on shorter distances.

Speed pedelecs, on the other hand, are like the turbo-charged version. They can reach speeds of up to 45 km/h with pedal assistance, making them ideal for longer distances that would normally be too far to bike. Remember: with great speed comes great responsibility. You'll need a license, insurance, and a helmet to ride one. Make sure you know the rules before you hit the road!

The S-Pedelec, the faster category.

  • S-Pedelecs are classified as mopeds in the EU (cat. L1e-B) and thus require insurance and a license plate.

  • The maximum motor output is 4,000 watts (CH: max. 1,000 watts) and the pedal support works up to 45 kph.

  • Push assistance without pedaling is 6 kph.

  • There are different regulations, sometimes even at the local level, in EU countries. There are currently certain political initiatives that would open up the use of bicycle lanes for S-Pedelecs as well.

  • A license plate with a valid vignette is required.

  • Child seats and trailers are prohibited in the EU.

The legal regulations are clearly defined in Switzerland and the EU. These are not implemented consistently within the EU, however, and they may be handled differently at the local level. To avoid any misunderstandings, riders are recommended always to take advice from their local specialist dealer – for enjoyable and safe riding.
